CBR EXCLUSIVE: DC Universe’s Titans Will Explore Robin & Batman’s Fallout

When the trailer for DC Universe’s Titans debuted at Comic-Con International in San Diego, it was met with instantaneous controversy, particularly for the moment where Robin declared, “F*ck Batman.”

According to co-creator Geoff Johns, the live-action series was always going to be controversial — but that’s a good thing. While he believes the trailer isn’t representative of the show as a whole, he says it is indicative of the show’s plan to explore Robin’s fallout with the Dark Knight.

“It is! It is controversial! I think that was expected though, you know? I don’t think anyone was like, ‘What? Wait! What?!’ As I’ve been telling people, I’m like, you know, not to take the trailer as, ‘This is the whole show.’ But I’m glad there’s discussion and there should be discussion about that and why we would go that direction and why Robin would ever get to that point,” Johns explained to CBR at SDCC. “You know, a big part of the series is exploring — and I’m doing that with Akiva Goldsman, Greg Berlanti and Greg Walker — and a big part of the series that we’re exploring is the moment that Robin left Batman.”

“In the Titans, he was kind of a lost character,” he continued. “He was looking for what his next thing was, and the Titans individually are all lost and they form a family — a surrogate family that’s… you know, we’re staying true to Marv [Wolfman] and Geroge [Perez]’s take on the Titans in that sense. But you’re going to see what Robin’s gone through and why he’s gotten to that point and I’m excited for people to see it. I don’t think they really quite know what the show is, and it’s going to be fun to watch.”

He also teased a few of the other characters we’ll encounter on the series. “Well, Donna Troy — Wonder Girl — you’re going to see her. That’s been rumored out there, I think, for a while — on CBR!” he said with a laugh. “Hawk and Dove, who are in episode 2 and they’re fantastic. They are really, really, really, really strong. You know, the thing with Titans is that whole universe of Titans is open to us, so we’ll be exploring every facet of that as we go through the series, but the first season… you know, I’ve spoiled enough characters for a season.”

Debuting on the DC Universe streaming service October 12, Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Minka Kelly as Dove and Lindsey Gort as Amy Rohrbach.
