The SVOD platform’s first scripted series hosted its world premiere Wednesday in New York ahead of its Oct. 12 debut. DC Universe is showing early confidence Titans, its first live-action scripted original series.
The recently launched SVOD platform on Wednesday handed out a season two renewal for the Greg Berlanti-produced drama ahead of its Oct. 12 premiere. The news comes mere hours after Titans filled the Hammerstein Ballroom for its world premiere at New York Comic Con.
Originally developed for TNT but picked up to series for the recently launched DC Universe platform,the show centers on Dick Grayson (aka Robin) as he emerges from Batman’s shadow to lead a new band of heroes. Brenton Thwaites (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) stars as the Boy Wonder and leads a group of heroes including Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft) and Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). Alan Ritchson (who plays Hawk), Minka Kelly (Dove), Lindsey Gort (Amy Rohrbach), Seamus Dever and Bruno Bichir (Chief) recur. Berlanti executive produces the Warner Bros. TV drama alongside Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter, Greg Walker and John Fawcett.

Titans recently secured a second window deal with Netflix, which will distribute the series internationally. The offshore deal with Netflix will provide a cash infusion to the recently launched DC Universe platform. The Titans move has parallels to CBS All Access’ 2016 decision to sell foreign rights for the pricey drama Star Trek: Discovery to Netflix. At the time, CBS All Access was still in its infancy, with only The Good Fight available. While the Discovery deal also included the massive Star Trek library of more than 700 episodes, it still provided a financial infusion for a recently launched streaming service taking a big scripted swing, as is the case with DC Universe and Titans.
The Titans renewal caps a wave of DC Universe news that came out of its New York Comic Con panel. Kaley Cuoco was tapped to lead the voice cast for DCU’s Harley Quinn animated series, and Matt Bomer joined the cast of Titans spinoff Doom Patrol. Additionally, the 1984 Helen Slater-led feature Supergirl and Syfy’s Superman prequel Krypton will be available to stream on the DCU platform. They join the animated movies Reign of the Supermen, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five and Batman: Hush.
DC Universe launched Sept. 15. The subscription service provides a mix of scripted originals as well as access to DC-themed TV, film and comic books.
